1.4: Frame

The final exercise of this project makes use of the viewfinder grid display of a digital camera. This function projects a grid onto the viewfinder screen to help align vertical and horizontal lines, such as the horizon or the edge of a building, with the edge of the frame.

By focusing on a single section of the viewfinder grid, I was able to simplify my compositions and make them more focused. I learned that aligning elements like vertical lines and the horizon with the grid’s lines made the images feel more balanced. When reviewing the set, I noticed a strong visual rhythm emerging between the images. The patterns of light and shadow seemed to unify the shots, even though each was composed independently. The gestalt of the set came together when viewed as a whole, and I realized that sometimes the power of an image lies in its simplicity.

This exercise encouraged me to slow down, focusing on one part of the frame at a time, and finding connections between individual elements. By thinking in terms of gestalt, I was able to practice how to create cohesive and compelling compositions that resonate not just in isolation, but as part of a larger visual story.
